I was watching SBS channel’s ‘The world game’, on Sunday the 26th of February, and a reporter on this show referred to the Persian Gulf as the A-r-a-b-i-a-n Gulf. This reporter’s name was Mr. McIntyre.
These are the emails to send your protesting statements to.
Dear sirs,
I was watching your programme ‘The World Game’ on Sunday the 26th of February, when I stumbled across an incorrect usage of the term ‘Arabian Gulf’. The correct name for this body of water is the ‘Persian Gulf’. The reporter’s name who made this error was Mr. McIntyre.
The group of experts on Geographical Names was set up by the secretary-general of the United Nations in pursuance of economic and Social council resolution 715A(XXVII) on April 23, 1959 and has endorsed ‘Persian Gulf’ as the official name for this body of water.
The use of the name ‘Arabian Gulf’ was described to be ‘faulty’ by the eighth United Nations conference on the standardization of Geographical names, Berlin, 27 August September 2002.
The term ‘Arabian Gulf’ was first coined by Pan-Arab nationalists in the 1960s as an offensive term used primarily to irritate their Persian neighbours. In stark contrast, historical and unique name of The Persian Gulf and its equivalents in different languages has been continuously in used since 3000 years ago in all languages, cultures, and all civilizations throughout the centuries and across the world. More than 2000 ancient literatures, books and maps belong to the past three millenniums, which contain this historical and heritage name are proof to the Persian Gulf as the right nomenclature.
I, amongst others, would appreciate if SBS would rectify this gross anomaly.
Thanks,
Javad
