AFC, Tehran
Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday allowed women to attend major sporting events, ending a ban imposed since the Islamic Revolution of 1979.

Now, women will be permitted to attend football matches played all over the country. The new rule applies to both domestic league competitions as well as the national team games.

Speaking on the state-run television, Ahmadinejad said he had ordered the head of Iran’s Physical Education Committee to make sure women were adequately catered for during Iran’s major sporting occasions. “The presence of women and families in public places promotes chastity,” he said. “The best stands should be allocated to women and families in the stadiums in which national and important matches are being held.”

There were regular protests against the ban, especially when women supporting visiting foreign teams were allowed into stadiums to watch their side.

Authorities had allowed women to watch smaller sports, such as basketball or volleyball but watching Iran’s popular national football team has been a male-only past-time for the past 27 years.

Meanwhile, new jerseys of the Iran national team were unveiled in Tehran recently. The white-coloured home and red-coloured away jerseys provided by the sports company Puma were exhibited by male models in a fashion show. In line with the green-white-red Iranian flag, the white jerseys have green and red and the red jerseys green and white stripes.
