Iran Pro League champions Esteghlal assistant coach and former player Samad Marfavi was elevated to the position of head coach yesterday after the departure of Amir Ghalenooie.
Marfavi, 41, was Ghalenooie’s assistant since 2003 and played a key role in the club clinching the league title and a berth in the AFC Champions League.
“Our main goal is to follow the strategies set by Ghaleenoie,” said Marfavi. “We have our task cut out for us if we are to defend our league title and do well in the AFC Champions League.”
As a player, Marfavi scored 11 goals for Team Melli in 31 appearances. He is a revered figure at Esteghlal and known for delivering his best in derby games against Tehran rivals Persepolis.
