Saudi Arabia’s Brazilian coach Marcos Paqueta says his main aim is to lead the team to the top of the Asian rankings after a revamp in FIFA’s ranking system saw them plummet from 34th to 81st in the worldwide ladder.
Australia is the highest ranked team in Asia at 33rd while Iran are second (47th), ahead of Asian champions Japan (49th).
“Our results in the recently concluded World Cup weren’t that good and that’s enough to prove we still have a long way to go,” said the 47-year-old Paqueta.
“We are now working towards improving our ranking to be Asia’s no. 1,” Paqueta added.
The team is currently camping in Abha here in preparation for their AFC Asian Cup 2007 qualifier against India on August 16 at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkota.
Paqueta refuted media reports quoting veteran Saudi goalkeeper Mohamed Al Deayea as saying that he would not play for the team as long as the Brazilian was in charge. “I don’t think he said that. It’s a fabrication by the media. In fact, he thanked me after the World Cup for giving him a chance and asked me not to call him again.”
Al Deayea played second fiddle to Mabrouk Zayed in the World Cup and failed to add to his world record tally of 181 appearances.
