Bayern Munich thrashed Spartak Moscow by 4-0 in their opening match of the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League season.
Bayern dominated the match already in frst half, but failed to break the deadlock against the very defensive minded Russians. But a few minutes into second half, Claudio Pizarro took advantage of a a mistake from Austrian national team defender Martin Stranzl to open the scoreline.
Roque Santa Cruz the doubled the scoreline before Bastian Schweinsteiger opened his account to make it 3-0.
Ali Karimi then came on as third sub for Santa Cruz in minute 81 and immediately had the chance to score when he received a corss inside the area with his back towards the goal. Karimi, however, misjudged the situation and instead of turning a shooting on goal, he tried to forward the ball to a teammate, but had to see his pass being intercepted.
The Iranian international made the crowd roar just seconds later with a good solo run against three Moscow defenders, but finally hesitated too long to take a shot and was dispossessed inside the box.
So it was Hassan Salihamidzic who added a fourth when he slotted the ball home from close range.
