Borussia Dortmund, who had goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller sent off early in the second half, lost an all-Bundesliga clash with Hanover 96 1-0.
Dortmund almost managed to hold on for extra-time but Vahid Hashemian struck three minutes from time to put Hanover ahead.
The match ended in controversy as the referee awarded Dortmund a penalty in the third minute of added time only to reverse his decision under advice from the linesman.
