Although several key players were missing due to injuries and suspensions there was no place for Ali Karimi in Bayern’s starting lineup against Sporting Lisboa in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday evening.
Instead, coach Felix Magath included youngster Christian Lell as rightback while Willy Sagnol played in an unusual rightwinger position. The unsuccessful experiment was ended at halftime, when Julio dos Santos replaced Lell and Sagnol moved back to defense.
The almost 70.000 spectators in the Allianz Arena witnessed an open match between two equal sides and chances on both sides, however, no goals occured until the final whistle.
Ali Karimi came on ten minutes from time for Roque Santa Cruz and overtook the offensive midfield role. The playmaker was involved in some goalmouth action when he first combined with Hassan Salihamdzic on the right to win a corner and then drove in the corner kick himself to see Martin Demichelis’ great header being cleared off the goalline.
Short time later a turnover by Karimi resulted in a quick counter by Sporting which fortunately didn’t result in a goal, however, the Iranian international then set up the last chance of the game with a piece of brilliance; Karimi perfectly backheeled the ball in the path of Claudio Pizarro inside the area, but the Peruvian striker’s shot from very promising position could be blocked before Bayern’s today best player Roy Makaay also failed to convert the rebound.
Bayern are now qualified for the second round having collected ten points out of four matches.
On Wednesday Mehdi Mahdavikia and Hamburg will host FC Porto.
